SECHC supports UA-Huntsville NCAA D1 hockey

Part of Commissioner’s Corner:

The 2011-12 season was very exciting for the SEC Hockey Conference. The season started on a very troubling note with the announcement by the interim president of the University of Alabama – Huntsville that the UAH Chargers would be leaving the NCAA and converting to collegiate club hockey status.

UA-Huntsville is the only NCAA D1 hockey program in the south and is respected and admired by everyone associated with the SECHC and hockey fans throughout the country.  We were happy to learn that the poor decision to drop the team to club status was overturned due to the hard work of UA-Huntsville alumni players, local businesses and hockey fans who stepped up to voice their outrage and committed to donating money to retain the team at the NCAA D1 level.

Congratulations to UA-Huntsville coach Chris Luongo and his entire staff and players for hanging in there.  Best of luck to you in the 2012-13 season. The UA-Huntsville Chargers are a classy organization and we are proud to partner with them to grow the sport of hockey in the south.

(Note: The Alabama Frozen Tide will play an exhibition game against the UA-Huntsville Chargers on October 6th at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville)
