Frozen Tide Splits First Two Games Of Weekend With Shootout Win

The Frozen Tide lost 4-3 against Florida Gulf Coast University on Thursday and then went on to beat FGCU with a 4-3 shootout win on Friday.

The first game didn’t see any scoring in the first period. Florida Gulf Coast would get on the scoreboards first, scoring two goals within a minute of each other. They added a power-play goal to go up by three.

The Frozen Tide got on the scoreboard when Brandon Butler took a pass from Cody Colbert and put it in the net.  Defenseman Ryan Vinson scored on the powerplay taking the score to 3-2.

The Eagles would score another goal finishing out the second period leading 4-2.

Matt Mayes opened the third period by scoring a power-play goal, bringing the Tide to within a goal with 18:20 left to go in the period. The Frozen Tide were unable to tie the game up throughout the period and were forced to pull goalkeeper Sean Vinson with a minute to go. Alabama was unsuccessful on tying the game with the extra man late in the game, falling 4-3.

In game two, Sean Vinson stopped all three Florida Gulf Coast opportunities in the shootout and Tanner Himmelman scored the only goal for Alabama in the shootout, giving the Frozen Tide a 4-3 victory.

Alabama found itself in familiar position, with a 2-0 deficit early in the second period. But, Kenneth Grabeldinger scored first for the Frozen Tide and was followed by Chris Edge, who tied the game at two.

The Eagles grabbed the lead again with a power-play goal, taking the score to 3-2.

However, Matt Mayes scored for Alabama, tying the game and eventually sending it to overtime.

Zach Dailey, Tanner Himmelman and Jeff Pease recorded assists for the night.

Alabama, who improved their record to 4-6-0 on Friday, will go on to play South Florida on Saturday and Sunday in Brandon, Fl.
