Former ODU Hockey Player Killed While Serving Country

March 7, 20011 – It is saddened news that former ODU player Zachery Cuddeback was killed this past week while serving in the US Air Force. Zachery Cuddeback was one of two airmen killed when a man opened fire at the Frankfurt airport on Wednesday March 2nd.

The SECHC sends sincere condolences and love to Zachery’s family and to his ODU hockey family and to the BRHC.  We are all saddened to hear of the death of such a fine young man serving his country while our nation is at war. We pray for peace and comfort for Zachery’s family, teammates, and all who knew him.

The family has issued the following statement:

“Airman First Class and Hockey Player Extraordinaire Zachary Ryan
Cuddeback’s life was ended abruptly on March 2, 2011 while serving his nation in the Republic of Germany. Zac was shot and killed in the line of duty by an Islamic Terrorist. Zac was an Army brat that called many places his home, but had a special place in his heart for St. Louis, Missouri.

After moving to Virginia in 2003, Zac fell in love with hockey and played at the Charlottesville Ice Park. The only thing that would get him out of bed before 7 am was hockey. In 2008, Zachary graduated from William Monroe High School in Stanardsville, VA. Zac attended Old Dominion University for a year where he played on the ODU Monarch’s Ice Hockey Team.

His love of the Air Force, Cars, and Hockey were paramount in his life. Zac always had a smile on his face for everyone, but had no closer friend than his brother Tim. Zac will be remembered by his family and friends as an automobile enthusiast and for his love of the game of hockey.”

Zac’s Celebration Memorial will be held at his favorite place in the world – the Charlottesville Ice Park (Main Street Arena) – on March 9th, 2011 from 1-3 pm; the service is open to everyone wishing to honor Zac. Tim Cuddeback will be the pallbearer, escorted by his Mom and Dad.

In lieu of cards and flowers, request donations are made in Zac’s name to the Zachary Cuddeback Celebration Memorial, First Citizens Bank,, Routing 051401836, Account 008924216959; or through wire transfer to 053100300.
