Commissioner’s Corner: Second ACHA DIII Rankings Released

The second ACHA Division III rankings were just released, and once again, the South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference is in the thick of things.

Arkansas still leads the way in the Pacific Region as the No. 1 ranked team.  The Ice Hogs, sporting a strong 17-5-0 record and undefeated in D3 play became the first South Region DIII team to defeat an ACHA DI program with their exciting 4-3 OT win over DI Oklahoma. Arkansas also picked up wins against North Texas (DII), RMU-Springfield (DII), Wisconsin-Oshkosh (DII), Marquette-Wisconsin (DII), Missouri State and swept both games each against west division rivals Ole Miss and Alabama.  Arkansas will be the SECHC West Division #1 seed team at the SECHC Playoffs. Congratulations Razor Blades!

In the South Region, South Carolina is ranked third, Florida is ranked fourth. Alabama jumps back into the race with a strong fifth place position and Ole Miss is ranked sixth.

In the second ranking’s period, South Carolina defeated Florida Gulf Coast University 4-2 and travelled to Pelham and defeated Alabama 4-2, 2-1 in a shootout.  The Gamecocks also picked up wins against Clemson, Georgia, UNC-Wilmington, George Mason and two wins against Tennessee.

Alabama defeated Michigan-Flint in an exciting 4-3 OT game. The Frozen Tide also picked up wins against South Florida (twice), Georgia Tech, Tulane, Florida Gulf Coast University and split two games with SECHC West Division rival, Ole Miss.

Ole Miss defeated Grand Valley State (Michigan, and picked up two wins each against Auburn and Tennessee. They also had a two-game split against Alabama.

The third rankings will be released Jan. 24, 2014, and the final rankings will be posted Feb. 14, 2014, after the SECHC Playoffs.  The top two teams in each region will receive an auto bid to Nationals and do not have to compete at Regionals.  Teams ranked No. 3 to No. 10 will compete at Regionals and must win both games at Regionals in order to qualify as their Region’s third and fourth seed teams.

The final rankings will almost certainly be impacted by the results of the SECHC Playoffs, which will make our playoffs more exciting  and more important than ever before.

Best wishes to all of you for a safe, memorable and wonderful Christmas.

Merry Christmas to all and remember, “You Can’t Step Out of Bounds in Hockey!”
