March 4, 2011 – Congratulations to all eight participating teams for a very exciting SECHC 2010-11 playoffs. We had some outstanding games each day leading to the championship game between our two # 1 seed teams; Florida from the east division and Arkansas from the west division.
Both teams played exceptionally well and Arkansas prevailed with a 5-2 victory and the first time ever presented, Thrasher Cup. Arkansas has now won back-to-back SECHC championships after Tennessee’s championship in the inaugural 2008-09 season.
Also, congratulations to the Georgia Ice Dogs and their 3rd place finish by defeating a very solid Alabama Frozen Tide team 7-4 in a wild 3rd place game.
I want to thank Darren Eliot and the Atlanta Thrashers for sponsoring the beautiful Thrasher Cup and the Player of the Match medallions. Also, thank you to the Columbus Sports Council, Merri Sherman and everyone associated with the sports council and Columbus Civic Center for running a truly professional tournament.
Our players and fans enjoyed the replays of all goals on the jumbotran, playing in the big arena, and the wonderful way they were welcomed and treated throughout the tournament. Every aspect of the tournament was well planned and coordinated and we walk away with nothing but good memories and gratitude.
Congratulations to Florida’s Daniel Sosa for being selected as the SECHC’s 2010-11 Most Valuable Player and to Alabama head coach Mike Quenneville for being awarded the first ever SECHC Coach John Hoos Coach of the Year Award named after the founder of the SECHC whose vision and passion led to the formation of our conference.
Thank you to Bob Klein and Kurt Totten and all of their officials who did a fine job on the ice and provided quality officiating. Ben Dishong provided his normal excellent reporting and stats updates after each game and we thank him as well.
Big thanks to Tommy Marsh and his employees at Crown Trophy-Columbus. Tommy designed the Thrasher Cup and the 1st and 2nd place trophies that everyone enjoyed. To the hockey fans who showed up to witness some exciting college hockey action, we thank you and hope to see you all again next year.
Until we hit the ice again, best wishes to all. See you in Naples, Florida!
