COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Auburn Tigers’ 2011 – 12 season got off to a rough start Sunday, as the South Eastern Collegiate Hockey Conference’s youngest member was defeated 11-3 at the hands of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
The Tigers opened their second season in the SECHC at their new home, the Columbus Ice Rink in Columbus, Ga., but could not withstand the offensive onslaught by the Yellow Jackets which included a hat trick by Kenny McCrary.
The loss represents the third straight lopsided game between these two squads, as Georgia Tech outscored Auburn last season by a combined tally of 18-1.
Warren Sheak opened the game with a goal for the Jackets midway through the first period.
Auburn responded seven minutes later as defenseman Seph Kestner lit the lamp for the Tigers as the two teams went into the first intermission tied at one.
The Yellow Jackets came out of the locker room and controlled the pace of play in the second period, scoring three early goals to take a 4-1 lead.
The Tigers cut into the lead thanks to a goal by Dion Moore, but the Jackets quickly answered to extend the margin to three heading into the second intermission.
The third period, similar to the second, saw Georgia Tech score three more early goals. The Yellow Jackets went on to outscore Auburn 6-1 in the final frame. The lone Tigers goal was scored by forward Pete Leone, with Anthony Generotti picking up the assist.
The Tigers will look to rebound as they play the Florida State Seminoles at the Columbus Ice Rink on Friday night for an 8:30 PM ET match up. Florida State also plays its home games at the Columbus Ice Rink.
